Chapter Seven - The Workshop
Safe working conditions

How many books have you read that simply say, "Make this," or "Make that," with no clear help on how to do it?

When an enthusiast talks about their hobby, it is all too often assumed that everyone else shares that person's skills and workshop facilities to make all the bits and pieces that are needed.  Yet many people will start out with little more than a screwdriver to change the occasional plug, and will certainly have had no experience in metalworking.

It is for this 'silent majority' that this chapter on workshop techniques has therefore been included. We hope too that those who already have considerable workshop experience will also read it, as it contains many useful hints and tips on ways of doing things.

We start out by listing all the tools you might think about getting someday, although much can be done with only a few. We then progress through all the techniques you may well find useful in making stills and the other equipment you will need, from making good seals to silver soldering.

In particular, a whole section has been devoted to describing not one, but four different ways in which boiler power may be easily controlled. This is further supplemented in Appendix 5 by detailed plans for a fully variable power controller that fully complies with all the most recent legislation governing control of heavy electrical power loads.

We hope that this addition to the general run of books on the subject of small-scale distillation will prove to be useful - showing you not only what to do, but how.
