Life would be very boring if we concentrated all our attention on just one activity. There are many clubs and organizations for people
interested in just about any activity you could imagine ...making beer, making wine, cooking, dyeing, aromatherapy, etc. and people primarily interested in one single activity – beermaking for example, would do well to join one of
these dedicated groups. However, if your interests are wider, you will quickly find that single-minded focus on just one thing can often become tedious ... even boring. We in the Amphora Society try to cross the
boundaries between such dedicated interests. We revel in diversity, and try to blur the boundaries between art and science, craftsmanship and engineering. In doing this, we often find that the skills and techniques
employed in one discipline can also be applied to enhance the practice of another. We therefore strive to be a clearing house for information, techniques, procedures and recipes. If you share our philosophy, please help us
grow and expand our boundaries! It was for this reason that we decided when writing our first book, The Compleat Distiller, to describe ourselves as a "Society", the implication being that our interests were wider
than just single-minded pursuit of a single technique, and that there are many like us who share this philosophy. After all, to become a skilled distiller, you have to be more than just a craftsman able to design and
construct the equipment, you also have to be an artisan skilled in the preparation and treatment of the raw materials that end up yielding a product that will be pleasing to others. The principles and techniques of
distillation cross many boundaries and are not, as many believe, merely confined to distillation of alcohol. As the montage picture at the top of this page illustrates, it embraces flavors and scents as well as beverages. Please browse our site, and feel free to contact us with any questions, suggestions, or to offer to add some of your own content to it. The more who participate, the broader our knowledge will become, and the wider our
circle of friends. |
