Chapter 3 - Putting Theory into Practice
Now ... what shall I call it?

This is the chapter where we start to apply some of the basics discussed in the previous chapter, 'How distillation works'.

We look at batch and continuous distillation, describing the differences between these two processes. then go on to examine a simple still that might be used to survive in a desert. The point of this exercise is to point up the fact that even simple equipment may be improved if enough thought is given to it. For this is the aim of the book - to encourage you to think of what is happening with a particular piece of equipment, and then see if improvements can't be made using that knowledge. It's the difference between painting a picture by numbers, slavishly following a set of step-by-step instructions with no idea of what is going on,

or creating a work of art that is all your own work.  We firmly believe that you will welcome the opportunity to spread your wings and fly on your own.

We follow this with an examination of all the units of a still, from the boiler to the final condenser, then look at all the different types of still there are. We have tried to follow the best principles of structured learning in this, and in the rest of the book. Each part follows naturally from that which went before, and so builds a sound edifice of knowledge on a firm foundation. If things seem to be repeated from time to time, it is because we take another look from a different perspective in order to apply concepts that were not covered previously.
