The Amphora Society is designing a fuel ethanol still capable of producing 40-50 gallons of fuel ethanol a day. Fed with regular fermented wash
the first prototype, shown here, delivered 95% abv fuel fuel ethanol in a steady stream, stopping during tests only when we ran out of fermented wash to feed it!Being designed with farmers in mind, we are aiming for
a still that will run continuously 24 hours around the clock, requiring periodical cleaning only if the fermented wash contains a lot of suspended solids. All that will be needed is a steady supply of fermented
wash, prepared from grain or any other fermentable biomass, It should therefore be capable of operating with a wide variety of washes, including those most difficult ones that tend to foam. It should also be easy
to disassemble for cleaning in a matter of minutes, and then quickly put back together again. Development is being carried out in New Zealand, and no less than 12 different prototypes have been made so far to
incorporate design improvements revealed during testing. The latest design looks very different to the first prototype we made, and which is shown here, and we're happy to report that it is very much more
efficient. |

That first prototype required only 4.5kW to run, and delivered product at the rate noted above. The latest design
achieved that output on its first run, but with just 2kW. The task ahead of us now is to optimise its efficiency and to ensure that the design meets the highest reliability, durability and safety
criteria. Many small farmers would find such a still more than adequate to run all their equipment at much less cost than if they continued to use conventional fuels. They could then utilise grain or
other biomass that brings low returns on the market as a useful and economic resource. To achieve that, our equipment will have to be an investment well worth considering, offering durability and
reliability with economic running costs. We firmly believe that the new distillation techniques we have developed and are now testing will meet those requirements. However, as qualified
engineers, we have a strict policy of never releasing equipment until it satisfies the highest manufacturing and operational standards, so we must stress that our new still is NOT on the market ... yet!
Nevertheless, we invite those interested to contact us for more details, and also help us by specifying what your targets are. |
