Chapter 4 - Equipment Design
Design & innovation

This is where we look at the detailed design of all the different types of equipment you might need. A comprehensive examination of all the design criteria you will need to take into account, why they need to be made that way, and what you should be aiming for.

Starting with an in-depth description of all the materials you might use, we then describe the boiler you will use to produce the vapor, what characteristics it should have and how it can best be controlled.

Every type of still is examined, from the simplest pot still to the compound still that will produce an extremely pure product. The different ways of managing compound stills are described, from the traditional methods of liquid management to more advanced techniques of cooling and vapor management. The information in this chapter is then supplemented in Chapter 5  by step-by-step operating procedures for each type of still.

However, before designing and then operating your still, you may wish to explore the world of botanicals and make your start there. Chapter 5 is therefore followed by a chapter on Botanicals and Essences, and the types of equipment you will need for that. Only then do we take you to Chapter 7 and the tools and techniques you will need in your workshop.
